Drugs and alcohol negatively affect brain function and can cause mental and physical health disruptions1. Our treatment programs target the different areas that are affected, and work to re-calibrate the neuronal passageways to normalize physical, mental, and behavioral processes.

Who is Outpatient Rehab For?

Are you using drugs or alcohol every day? If so, you have a substance abuse disorder that needs to be resolved. Here at Garden Heights Recovery Center, our outpatient treatment program is designed to help people like yourself recover from substance abuse.

Our outpatient program allows you to continue living your life as usual, while being treated for a substance use disorder. You can attend to obligations that involve parenting, working, school, etc. and attend our facility for treatment a few times per week.

We will teach you how to maintain sobriety on a daily basis, while managing your everyday responsibilities. Your treatment may include individual counseling as needed, and also group sessions. These treatment modalities will expand and improve your perspective on life, and enhance your self-awareness and commitment to living a sober life. We provide both day and evening programs to fit your schedule, and cover many areas of recovery in the process.

Recovery Group Programs for Manhattan, N.Y. Residents

Group therapy is an important recovery treatment program.  In group therapy, you will become a part of a community of peers, encouraging and sharing common issues with each other, and also creating bonds of mutual support and friendship.

Our group sessions are led by counselors and therapists knowledgeable and experienced in addiction recovery processes that can lead you to a successful outcome. There are various therapy models that the counselor may follow, and they can include: Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)2.

Group sessions usually last about 45 to 60 minutes, and begin with the counselor introducing a topic of discussion. Examples of a topic can include: guilt, gratitude, triggers, self-care, healthy habits, etc. Each group member is given a chance to respond to the topic and share how it affects him.

Once the group has responded with their input, the counselor will consider the answers, and draw conclusions that will place the answers in a positive perspective for all to learn from. The counselor will teach the group how to overcome negative self-talk, and how they can improve a bad situation from the past. Although substance abuse may have created a bleak outlook, members can work towards creating a better future.

Group therapy gives members a chance to socialize and share their concerns and triumphs. They can discuss their best and worst moments, how they can handle triggers and temptations, and what goals they are setting for their future. Making a list of positive and negative attributes, and how to use the good to overcome the bad, is a useful tool that a member can use when he feels vulnerable.

Learning the importance of self-care is another great topic that may be discussed in group therapy. The acronym HALT = Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired, can make a person vulnerable. Learning to eat nutritious meals, staying well-hydrated, getting enough rest, exercising, socializing with family and friends, enjoying hobbies or sports, practicing your faith or spiritual persuasion, all work together to keep you healthy in body, mind, emotions, and spirit.

Relapse Prevention Program

Relapsing back into addiction can happen, but there are techniques to help an individual remain sober. The risk of relapse happens in three stages: emotional, mental and physical, and the process can begin months before an individual begins to use drugs or alcohol again.

Learning about the three stages of relapse can help you stop the process:

  • Emotional relapse starts with an individual’s thoughts and behavior. He may be feeling anxious or angry, and begin to isolate himself from family and friends. His eating and sleeping habits may change, and he neglects self-care.
  • During the mental stage, the individual starts to think about using drugs or alcohol again. He reminisces about the people and places associated with his substance abuse, and starts to debate with himself about using again.
  • The physical relapse is when the individual takes his first drink or drug again, which leads to regular use.

A relapse prevention program equips the individual with the education and tools he needs to stop the process of a relapse before it starts to overpower him.
